Law Firm’s Founding Partner Jack W. Burtch Named as Leader in Law

Recognition Reflects Contribution to Legal Profession and Community at Large

RICHMOND, Va. – October 1, 2009 – Macaulay & Burtch is proud to announce that the firm’s founding partner and attorney Jack W. Burtch has been named to Virginia Lawyers Weekly’s “Leaders in the Law” Class of 2009.

“JB Burtch’s reputation extends beyond his achievements as a legal practitioner,” said partner Alexander M. Macaulay. “His greatest contribution to the legal profession, and to the community at large, is as a mentor and spiritual guide. No one has had more of an impact on the younger generations of lawyers than JB. He models effective, ethical, real-world behavior for other lawyers and expects them to practice law with technical skill, common sense, and a passion for the law and its virtues,” said Macaulay.

The nomination, submitted by Macaulay, comprised testimonies from more than a dozen fellow attorneys and protégés in various law firms and legal departments throughout the Richmond area.

Craig Merritt of Christian & Barton commented on Burtch’s “unusual combination of professional excellence and personal humility.  JB has invested deeply in teaching young lawyers how to act responsibly, ethically and intelligently.”  For a generation of lawyers in Richmond, such as Troy Savenko of Gregory Kaplan, “JB inspires us to give back to our profession and community.  His legacy will be the legions of lawyers who will continue in that tradition.”

Burtch’s has made significant contributions to the legal profession, serving on the Board of the Virginia State Bar’s Senior Lawyers Conference and Conference of Local Bar Associations, and teaching negotiations and counseling skills at the University of Richmond Law School for more than 15 years.  His deep commitment to the Richmond community is exemplified in his leadership with the Children’s Home Society of Virginia and the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia.

Burtch’s law practice focuses on representation of executives, professionals, businesses and non-profit organizations in labor and employment matters. He has been named to Best Lawyers in America and Virginia’s Legal Elite in the labor and employment category.  He was recently selected by Virginia Super Lawyers as one of the Top 50 Super Lawyers in the Commonwealth.

Virginia Lawyers Weekly Leaders in the Law seeks to recognize lawyers who have made outstanding contributions to the practice of law in Virginia, have significant achievements through the practice of law, have demonstrated leadership in improving the justice system or have made important contributions to Virginia’s legal community and/or the community at large. Burtch is one of only 28 Virginia attorneys to receive this honor. He will be recognized at a reception on October 22, 2009 at the Bolling-Haxall House in downtown Richmond.
